， 贫僧昼夜不息，祈请圣安。据贫僧所知……"便将当年之事-一奏闻。冷泉帝听了，好似晴天霹雳。他又惊又怕，一时方寸大乱，无言以对。僧都自思康突，恐一时 龙颜羞恼，降下罪来，便要悄悄告退。冷泉帝叫住他，说道："这么多年你才告诉于我，我真要怨你不忠了。若我今生一无所知，来世不知要遭多少报应呢。我且问 你，此事除你之外，可尚有他人知悉乃至泄露？"僧都答道："除贫僧外，只有王命妇知悉了。近来天行无常，瘟疫泛滥，国家连遭不幸，贫增思忖恐正是此事所 致，因此斗胆启奏。往日陛下年幼，未话世事，神佛亦念无知而恕罪。而今陛下年事渐长，已洞悉世事，而未尽孝道，神佛使自降灾以示惩戒。父母者，人之根本， 吉凶世事，往往因之。贫僧将此等秘事告之陛下，望陛下知罪弥补。"说时不胜唏嘘。其时天光大亮，僧都便即告退。

冷泉帝常穿青黑色丧服，其俊逸清秀之态，与源氏内大臣如出一脉。他以前揽镜自视，亦偶有此感。自听了僧都的话后，将自己与源氏内大臣仔细比较，愈发深 感父子情深。他'总想找机会向源氏暗示此事。又恐内大臣难堪，终无勇气。故这期间他们只谈些琐碎小事，关系却更见亲密。冷泉帝对他恭敬有加，有时似超出君 臣之礼。内大臣体幽察微，心中惊诧，却终不知他已闻知其事了。
